Darling Heights Special Education Program provides educational support to students with disabilities enrolled at Darling Heights State School.  The Special Education Program (SEP) is a designated special education facility for primary aged students with Intellectual Disability (ID), Speech Language Impairment (SLI) and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  It also caters for students who live in the local area and have other disabilities such as Hearing Impairment (HI), Physical Impairment (PI) and Vision Impairment (VI).

The SEP teachers and teacher aides have many years experience working in special education.  The level of support provided to individual students is determined by assessment of their needs in collaboration with parents, early childhood centres and support agencies.  Please contact Mrs Ros Hibberd (Deputy Principal - Student Services) on (07) 4636 8333 for further information.

Our Guidance Officer, is also available at Darling Heights State School Tuesday to Friday and supports the academic, social and emotional and behaviour needs of all students at the school, from Prep to Year 6, as outlined in our Learning and Wellbeing Framework (PDF, 1009 KB).  Parents, teachers and students themselves can request support, advice and assessment for a wide range of issues that may, in some way, impact on a child’s learning progress or happiness at school.  The Guidance Officer works closely with other school based support personnel and outside agencies to resolve problems that may arise as quickly as possible.

When the Guidance Officer needs to provide formal assessment of an individual student, parent support is sought and feedback is provided following the activity. Often, early intervention and support can prevent small issues becoming larger ones.
